About

A community hub born from generosity

Nestled in the heart of the Lake District, CSSC is a purpose-built centre serving the diverse needs of our vibrant village. Its origins lie in the remarkable generosity of local resident, John Usher, who, upon his passing in 1993, bequeathed the majority of his estate to five village organisations, including the long-established Coniston Amateur Football Club (Coniston AFC).

In an act of extraordinary community spirit, Coniston AFC donated its legacy to the founding of CSSC. A dedicated committee of local volunteers then stepped forward to coordinate the project, securing additional funding through local fundraising initiatives and a substantial grant from the Sport England Lottery Fund. Today, CSSC is a testament to the power of community collaboration and the enduring legacy of John Usher.

Driven by community, managed by volunteers

Our charity is managed by a dedicated Management Committee of twelve volunteers, who generously contribute their time to ensure the Centre’s smooth operation. The Committee is supported by our Honorary Officers, comprising four Trustees, the President, and the Treasurer.

We are fortunate to have a team of dedicated staff, including a full-time Centre Manager, part-time Centre Administrator & Finance Officer, Cleaner, Maintenance personnel, and Bar Assistants, who work tirelessly to maintain and enhance our facilities.

Deeply rooted in the Coniston community, we provide a wide range of services, encompassing sporting facilities, children and youth activities, camping, and function room and bar hire. Our site boasts a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA), a Members’ Gym, and a football pitch.

Furthermore, we serve as the community’s designated Emergency Resilience Centre, playing a crucial role in local preparedness and response.
